Miguel A. Miranda is currently an Associate professor at the Laboratory of Zoology of the University of the Balearic Islands. His research activity during the last 20 years has been focused on Applied Entomology. Current research activity is mainly focused on the bioecology and control of fruit flies and vectors. He is member of the Culicoides expert group for the OIE, and from year 2015, he is member of the AHAW scientific panel of the EFSA.

He conducted his PhD on the bioecology of the Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata) in Majorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). He is currently participating as a partner coordinator (UIB) in the ENPI project FruitFlyNet focused on improving control methods against the Olive fly (Bactrocera oleae).

On Medical and Veterinary entomology his work on Culicoides is focused on improving monitoring systems, insecticide testing on biting midges, to study vector competence for different BT virus serotypes and improving our knowledge on population dynamics by using SIG and modelling tools. On mosquitoes, main topics are improving monitoring methods at local and national scale. His work also incudes invasive mosquitoes species, as for example Ae. albopictus. On ticks, main research is focused on identifying the species of ticks found in Majorca and the molecular analysis of its load of pathogens. On Phlebotomus perniciosus, vector of Leishmania infantum, the main interest was to study the seasonal dynamics and the prevalence of infected sandflies population. On bees he has studied the seasonal dynamics of Varroa destructor, with special emphasis on the evaluation of the current control methods in Majorca.
